Credit union rebrands itself

It?s a bright idea.

South Interlake Credit Union has changed its name to Sunova Credit Union to reflect the rising organization?s growth and outlook on the future, and the Lac du Bonnet branch held its grand opening May 21.

The day was marked with a special donation Sunova made to the Lac du Bonnet Library -- a brand new laptop.

?It?s our way of giving back to the community,? Sunova?s Zane Hunter said.

Head librarian Vicki Short said the library is certainly grateful to have such an item, which it wouldn?t be able to afford on its own.

?It?s definitely a luxury item for us,? she said with a smile.

Sunova marketing manager Vanessa Foster said the name change has been in the works for some time.

Based on the research and feedback from members and staff, the name ?South Interlake Credit Union? no longer properly represented the organization as five of the nine branches were outside the Interlake region, she said.

Foster said Sunova?s rebranding is not the result of an amalgamation, but rather a vibrant new name and look while providing the same solid services.

?We feel the name change really represents who we are,? Foster said noting ?Sun? identified the warmth of friendly staff while ?Nova? represents the companies rebirth.

?We wanted it to be short and sweet but we also felt the name should mean more than a combination of letters.?

Sunova president and CEO Edward Bergen said the name and logo also provide a new identity for an organization focussed on its corporate culture of service excellence.

?New, improved and recognizable, our brand has been created from the strongest elements of the South Interlake Credit Union foundation and the new Sunova style,? Bergen said. ?We look forward to continued focus on member service, innovation and expansion as we build and grow the Sunova brand.

Incorporated in 1955

The Stonewall Credit Union Society was incorporated in 1955. A name change took place in 1968 when the Teulon Credit Union merged with the Stonewall outlet to form the South Interlake Credit Union.

More than 50 years later, Sunova boasts a current membership of 22,600, assets of more than $480 million and employs a staff of 135. It is also ranked No. 38 in Canada among the top 100 credit unions and continues to climb.

Sunova will continue to operate its eight other branches in Whitemouth, Pinawa, Powerview-Pine Falls, Selkirk, Stonewall, Teulon, Beausejour, and Inwood. A 10th location in Oakbank is anticipated to open later this year.
