Library marks Remembrance Day
Posted 3 months ago
This coming week, the Library remembers those who made the ultimate sacrifice or were prepared to, for love of country and fellow man. The Oct./Nov. issue of The Beaver magazine features an article entitled Rescue! - Canadian Spies Outfox the Nazis to Save Allied Airmen.
Pictorial books include: Blitzkrieg - The Unpublished Photographs 1939-1942 by Ian Baxter; The First World War in Photographs by Adrian Gilbert; and The Decline and Fall of Nazi Germany & Imperial Japan - A Pictorial History of the Final Days of World War II.
Other titles: Hitler's Scientists - Science, War, and the Devil's Pact by John Cornwell; War Without Hate - The Desert Campaign of 1940-1943 by John Bierman and Colin Smith; The End of the Beginning - From the Siege of Malta to the Allied Victory at El Alamein by Tim Clayton and Phil Craig; The Sound of History - El Alamein 1942 by Richard Doherty; and The World of War series gives us Hit the Beach - Landings Under Fire by Simon Foster and Stalemate! - The Real Story of Trench Warfare by J.H. Johnson.
"Dogfights in the sky, ruthless political maneuvers, legendary heroes of the air like Richthofen (the "Red Baron") and Douglas Bader - Duel of Eagles by Peter Townsend combines all of these colorful, dramatic, and evocative accounts of the furious air conflicts that saved Britain from German invasion."
Winston Groom gives us A Storm in Flanders - Triumph and Tragedy on the Western Front. The Battle for Ypres began in 1914 when the German army launched its "race to the sea," a last ditch attempt to outflank the British and French armies and win the war before Christmas. Britain's long-service professional army was all but destroyed in the process, but it held the line. Both sides dug in for the long haul, finally coming to an end in 1918.
Wartime biographies available. Outcasts: A Love Story. Tibor Schroeder, a Christian reservist in the Hungarian forces allied with Nazi Germany, and Hedy Weisz, a young Jewish woman, meet and fall in love during the Second World War - a time when romantic liaisons and marriage between Christians and Jews were not only frowned upon but against the law.
Hedy and Tibor pledge their lives to each other only to be torn apart and not reunited until 25 years later in Canada. A movie based on this story is scheduled for release in 2009 from Postmodern Productions.
War Brides - The stories of the women who left everything behind to follow the men they loved by Melynda Jarratt, draws on original archival documents, personal correspondence, and key first-hand accounts to tell the amazing story of the War Brides in their own words - and shows the love, passion, tragedy, and spirit of adventure of approximately 48,000 British women.
Finally, for our junior readers, we have Remembrance - True War Time Stories of Veterans from Across the Country, donated by the Kinsmen Club of Oakbank - Springfield. "The aim of this book is to bring a personal look into the sacrifices that our parents, grandparents, great grandparents, and great, great, grandparents have made in years past to give us our lifestyle and freedom of today." A subtitle on the cover reads "If you love your freedom, thank a veteran."
